\This year was my third year in a row having a part of the Mac’s Midget Tournament in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The MMT is a very prestigious and well known tournament worldwide, attracting many future NHL and international stars. Previous participants include Jarome Iginla, Mike Modano, Bill Ranford, Wendel Clark, Ryan Smyth, and some kid named Sidney Crosby. Covering such a big tournament is a long and arduous task, requiring massive amounts of cooperation, organization and attention. There are 40 teams, and the goal is to get a good selection of photos for every single player in the tournament, it’s daunting, but a good challenge.
This was the first year that I ran the whole operation by myself. In 2007, I was working under Andy Devlin‘s direction, as it is his company (LA Media Photography and Design) that is hired to shoot the tournament. This year, though, Andy was in Timmons, ON shooting the world under-17 championships (With help from Toronto based Warren Hrycun, another good friend of mine). The tournament in 2008 was a bit of a warm up for me, as I had a bit more responsibility, sharing with an excellent hockey shooter based out of Kingston, ON, Matthew Manor. Matt shot the men, I shot the women, and I was more involved with the decision making process than I was as editor in 2007. 2009 was all me at the helm, and it went as smoothly as I could have hoped. Editing for me was Carolyn Brown, and shooting the women was another ON based photographer who has helped LA Media for many consecutive years, Brett Gundlock. Their help was essential, and they both played a huge part in this year’s tournament photography success.
Here are some hightlights from the week:
Congratulations to the Vancouver Giants and the St. Albert Slash on their much deserved wins.
